A week of family laundry

There isn't just one kind of stain.

Think about one week's laundry.

Grass on school clothes. Body oils on sheets. Sweat in activewear. Olive oil on a shirt. Berries on a child's sleeve.

Chemically, those aren't the same problem. That matters, because different kinds of soil respond to different kinds of cleaning chemistry.

Brilliance was built around that simple idea.

One formula. Multiple ways to clean.

Step 01 · Loosen + lift

First, dirt has to let go.

Water alone isn't particularly good at removing oily grime. Surfactants change that.

They help water spread through fabric, interact with oils and soils, loosen them from fibers, and keep released soil suspended in the wash so it can rinse away. The American Cleaning Institute similarly describes surfactants as ingredients that reduce surface tension and help surround and loosen grease, oil and dirt.

Brilliance uses multiple complementary surfactants rather than expecting one ingredient to do every job.

Cleaning starts with getting the mess off the fabric.

  4. Keep it in the wash water
  5. Rinse it away

Step 02 · Break down

Then we give different stains different tools.

Enzymes are highly specialized. A protease does a different job from a lipase. A lipase does a different job from an amylase.

That's why Brilliance uses six specialized enzymes instead of relying on one.

Those specialized functions are consistent with the American Cleaning Institute's guidance on laundry enzymes. ACI also notes that enzymes can contribute to effective lower-temperature laundering and work at relatively low concentrations.

One enzyme couldn't do all of that. So we use six.


Better cleaning comes from the system.

High-performance detergents aren't simply defined by one powerful ingredient. Different components work together.

The American Cleaning Institute specifically describes deeper-cleaning detergents as products designed for heavier stains and soils, and tells consumers to look for enzymes and multiple surfactants.

Published detergency research has also studied combinations of sugar-based alkyl polyglycoside surfactants and alpha olefin sulfonate, finding significant synergistic effects and evaluating their performance on fatty, oily and particulate soils.

That's remarkably close to the philosophy behind Brilliance:

Step 03 · Support release

The research that made us look twice.

During development, we found peer-reviewed research investigating nanodiamonds and surfactants in low-temperature cleaning.

Researchers studied nanodiamond particles approximately 5 nanometers in size alongside both anionic and nonionic surfactants. Their question was simple: could nanodiamonds help surfactants release difficult oily material from a surface?

They found a clear improvement in removal of model triglyceride when nanodiamond was present, including at temperatures as low as 15°C. That research helped inspire the approach behind NanoDiamond Clean™.

The cited research evaluated nanodiamond-assisted surfactant removal of model triglyceride from a hydrophobic test surface. It was not a finished-product performance test of Brilliance.

Removing a visible stain isn't the entire job.

Laundry chemistry also affects the particulate soil, buildup and surface characteristics that influence how fabric looks and feels after repeated washing.

Cellulase, one of the six enzymes in Brilliance, is used in laundry formulations not only for cleaning but also to support fabric appearance, including color-care benefits. ACI specifically notes that enzymes in laundry products can help improve fabric appearance.

That's one reason fabric care was built into Brilliance rather than treated as an afterthought.

Why it matters

We wanted both.

We didn't begin with a goal of making the most complicated detergent possible.

We wanted one detergent we could trust to handle the laundry our family actually created. School clothes, sports clothes, work clothes, towels, sheets and everything in between.

That meant refusing the idea that better ingredient standards had to mean weaker cleaning performance. So we kept going back to the science.
